This
commemorative sign or "LM158-Memorial-2019" was unveiled on 3 May
2019 due to the 75-year commemoration of the Lancaster LM158 crash on 13 June 1944
at 1:30 am. This was done at the initiative of Mr. J.P.Veen
from Eerbeek and it is placed at a tourist picnic
spot near the Soerense Zand
/ Den Texweg junction. It is a pole, sawn from inland
oak from an oak tree that grew in the surroundings of Eerbeek. There is a
plaque attached with a QR code with a link to a web page with a lot of
information.
The
commemorative sign was realized with the cooperation of "Hout en Bos"
Eerbeek, "Veco
Precision" Eerbeek (plaque), the "Committee
May 4 commemoration Eerbeek" and the municipality of Brummen.
The
RAF bomber LM158 crashed at coordinates 52 ° 05 "24.8" NB / 6 ° 04
"23" OL
In
2019, that is a forest plot between the Wilhelmina van Pruissenlaan
and the Juliana van Stolberglaan in Eerbeek.
Peter
Cocker, one of the sons of the crew member Eric Royston Cocker, came directly
from Australia on 3 May to attend the annual commemoration at the Hall cemetery
on 4 May. He wanted to pay a visit to the location where his father died before
the commemoration.
On
3 May 2019 a brief memorial event took place at 3 pm on the Wilhelmina van Pruissenlaan. After this moment of commemoration at which
there was a large audience, all those present went to the Soerense
Zand / Den Texweg
intersection. There, the commemorative sign "LM158-Memorial-2019" was
unveiled. The program was musically framed by the "48th Highlanders of
Holland Pipes and Drums" from Apeldoorn.
The
unveiling was performed by the mayor of Brummen Mr.
A. van Hedel, with Peter Cocker.
The
unveiling of LM158-Memorial-2019 therefore took place earlier than the initial
intention: 13 June 2019. But the unexpected presence of Peter Cocker on 3 May
led to a faster realization. Everyone has great appreciation for this.
